DISASTER RIDDEN COMMUNITIES

AROUND THE WORLD

Desert, swamp or jungle,

to get food to the hungry,

WORLD FOOD BANK's

logistics team has to negotiate

some of the toughest terrain

on the planet.

In 2011, WFP aims to reach more

than 90 million beneficiaries in

74 countries.

To achieve this goal, WFP will

rely on its impressive logistics

capacity.When the

areas needing food are not

accessible

by road, rail or river, other methods

are brought into play.

An emergency may

require a cargo drop from aircraft or a helicopter airlift,

but there are other

options too. Locally engaged

porters, as well as teams of elephants,

yak, donkeys and camels are also

used when necessary.

WORLD BANK

www.wfb.org

The World Bank has been involved

in post-disaster

recovery and reconstruction

for more than 25 years, with a trend

toward increasing lending for

risk reduction and mitigation,

mainly by integrating risk

reduction into investment programs.

Natural disaster assistance

accounted for 9.4 percent

of total World Bank commitments

between 1984 and 2005.

This share has been increasing

steadily over the years. In the last

four fiscal years

alone, the Bank has approved

$9.2 billion

for more than 215 disaster-related

projects, including non-lending

technical assistance.
